TOMAS KRAL

KRAL GRADUATED FROM THE ECOLE CANTONALE D’ART DE LAUSANNE (ECAL). AFTER FINISHING HIS UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE IN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN IN 2006, HE OBTAINED AT ECAL HIS MASTER’S DEGREE IN PRODUCT DESIGN IN 2008 AND ‘MAS DIPLOMA’ IN LUXURY DESIGN IN 2009. SINCE 2010, KRAL IS TEACHING AT ECAL IN THE DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN. HE FOUNDED HIS PRODUCT DESIGN STUDIO IN 2008 IN LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND.

IN THE CONTEXT OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND RESEARCH, KRAL’S APPROACH TO DESIGN IS CHARACTERIZED BY A CLEAR PREOCCUPATION FOR MATERIALS AND PROCESSES. IN GLASS, CORK OR CERAMIC, TOMAS KRAL WORKS ON VARIOUS PROJECTS RANGING FROM PRODUCTS TO LIGHTING, FURNITURE AND ACCESSORIES. HE OFTEN TAKES INSPIRATION IN THE TRADITION, AND TRANSLATES THEM WITH A TOUCH OF HUMOR AND INNOVATION. IN ORDER TO FIND NEW CREATIVE APPROACHES, SHAPES, DETAILS, ASSEMBLAGES AND PURPOSES HE FREQUENTLY OBSERVES AND EXPERIMENTS WITH CRAFTSMANSHIP AND THE KNOWLEDGE OF MANUFACTURERS.

KRAL EXHIBITED HIS WORK IN SEVERAL MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES. HIS WORK HAS RECEIVED SEVERAL AWARDS AND PRIZES INCLUDING LEITZ INNOVATION & DESIGN AWARD; EXCELLENCE PRIZE IN THE 9TH INTERNATIONAL BICYCLE DESIGN COMPETITION, AND SWISS FEDERAL DESIGN AWARD IN 2010. IN 2013 HE WAS AGAIN NOMINATED FOR THE SWISS FEDERAL DESIGN AWARD.

I DIDN’T WANT TO ALTER THE TRADITIONAL TURKISH TEA RITUAL; MY INTENTION WAS TO EMPHASIZE IT BY ADDING A SMALL GLASS PEDESTAL UNDER THE TRADITIONAL TEA GLASS.

PAMUKKALE

THE DESIGN OF THIS GLASS BOWL SET IS INSPIRED BY PAMUKKALE. I INTENDED TO USE THE FORM OF THESE OPAL BOWLS TO SHOW HOW THE ELEGANCE OF TURKEY’S NATURAL BEAUTY COMPARES TO THE SKILLFULNESS OF ITS TRADITIONAL GLASSWORKS.

EYE BOWL

A FRUIT BOWL DECORATED USING THE COLOR CODES OF THE EVIL EYE . THE IDEA BEHIND THIS IS TO CREATE A FUNCTIONAL EVIL EYE CHARM FOR THE HOUSE.

EVIL EYE TOTEM

THIS IS A 3D INTERPRETATION OF THE EVIL EYE . THE PARTS CAN BE EASILY DETACHED EXPOSING A FUNCTIONAL OBJECT IN EACH COLOR OF THE TRADITIONAL EVIL EYE. THE SET IS COMPOSED OF ONE PLATE, TWO CANDLE HOLDERS AND A CANDLE EXTINGUISHER.

A CONTEMPORARY FUSION OF THE HISTORICAL ARCHITECTURAL FORMS SPECIFIC TO THE OTTOMAN ERA WITH TRADITIONAL GLASS OBJECTS. THE VASES HIGHLIGHT PAŞABAHÇE’S TRADITIONAL HANDICRAFTS BY BLENDING SAND BLASTING AND GLASS PAINTING TECHNIQUES IN A PURE, COLORFUL, AND GRAPHIC STYLE.

CASCADE

THE TURKISH TEA GLASS IS SHAPED IN THE FORM OF THE WATERFALLS IN PAMUKKALE. THERE ARE STEPS ON THE GLASS FOR EASIER GRIP. THE GLASS SITS ON A DISC SHAPED SAUCER, WHICH IS DECORATED WITH CUTTING AND GILDING TECHNIQUES.

INITIALLY ALL THE VASES ARE FORMED IN THE SAME MOLD, BUT AFTERWARDS EACH VASE IS INDIVIDUALIZED WITH SPECIFIC CUTS.
