NEW YORK BASED INNOVATIVE DESIGN STUDIO AND COLLABORATOR TO LEADING BRANDS FOR DESIGN CONCEPT, STRATEGY AND INNOVATION PROJECTS BIRSEL+SECK WAS FOUNDED BY AYSE BIRSEL AND BIBI SECK.

AFTER COMPLETING HER STUDIES IN MIDDLE EAST TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY, AYSE BIRSEL QUALIFIED FOR FULBRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP TO ATTEND PRATT INSTITUTE FOR HER MASTER’S DEGREE IN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN. SHE IS KNOWN FOR BRINGING NEW SOLUTIONS TO OLD PROBLEMS BY USING HER OWN DESIGN PROCESS ‘DECONSTRUCTION: RECONSTRUCTION’ AND FOR HER USER CENTERED HUMANISTIC DESIGN APPROACH. SHE IS THE RECIPIENT OF NUMEROUS AWARDS INCLUDING THE ATHENA AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE AND YOUNG DESIGNERS AWARD FROM THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM OF ART. HER WORK CAN BE FOUND IN THE PERMANENT COLLECTIONS OF THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART, COOPER HEWITT NATIONAL DESIGN MUSEUM AND PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART.

BIBI SECK RECEIVED HIS MASTER’S DEGREE IN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN IN 1990 FROM ESDI, PARIS. HE HAS EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN MATERIALS AND MANUFACTURING, AND GUIDING LARGE DESIGN TEAMS THROUGH COMPLEX PROBLEMS. HIS DESIGNS WON CAR OF THE YEAR AWARD IN 1996 AND 2002, AND THE WATCH HE DESIGNED RECEIVED THE PRIX D’HORLOGERIE DE GENÈVE IN 2002.

THE NAME OF AN EXQUISITE DISH IN TURKISH CUISINE, KADINBUDU- LADY’S THIGHS- IS SO CULTURE SPECIFIC THAT IT SOUNDS PERFECT FOR THIS LINE. IN OUR IMAGINATION, THE CLASSICAL AND HISTORICAL FORMS OF CESM-I BULBUL, AND THE FLOW OF GLASS HAVE THIS FULL-BODIED, CURVY, FLABBY, AND VOLUPTUOUS APPEARANCE. SEEMINGLY, THIS FULLNESS LOOKS PERFECT ON THE GLASS AND CESM-I BULBUL.

CESM-I BULBUL DESIGNS AND MODERN FORMS ARE COMBINED IN THIS CROSS BETWEEN A PLANT WATERING POT AND A PITCHER. THE WATER PITCHER WAS RE-CREATED IN COLLABORATION WITH SEDA EVIS.

ANAMORPHIC IS A FAVORITE VISUAL ILLUSION FOR US. IT HAS AN ELEMENT OF MAGIC. WHEN PAŞABAHÇE ASKED US TO RE-DEFINE GLASS, WE WANTED TO RE-CREATE BEYKOZ AND CESM-I BULBUL IN AN INNOVATIVE STYLE. WE WANTED TO APPLY IT ON SOMETHING OTHER THAN GLASS, AND THIS LEAD TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANAMORPHIC WITH JON ENG.

EVIL EYE FACES AND HITTING THE BULL’S EYE

THE EVIL EYE REPRESENTS THE EYE. WE CONSTRUCTED FACES FOR THESE EYES. WE GAVE THEM A MOUTH TO EXPRESS EMOTIONS, AND MADE THEM INTO EVIL EYE EMOTICONS. IN CASE OF THE “HITTING THE BULL’S EYE”, THE HOLE ON THE CONVENTIONAL EVIL EYE SITS AT THE TOP, BUT WE PLACED IT RIGHT IN THE CENTER, LIKE THE AMERICAN BAGEL OR THE TURKISH SIMIT. THEY ARE BOTH PRODUCTS OF OUR THINKING OF HOW WE CAN UPDATE THE CLASSIC AND POPULAR EVIL EYE, AND HOW WE CAN ADAPT THIS LOVE STORY TO THE PRESENT DAY.
